How heat affects your electronic devices and how to protect them

The effects of high or even extreme heat can be widespread, from drying out your lawn to a general feeling of discomfort, but many may not consider the effects it has on your electronic devices and the damage it can cause. We look in to which devices are more likely to suffer in the heat, and simple things that you can do to protect them.

Many of us know that petrol and diesel cars and heat do not mix very well, but rising temperatures can have even more of a detrimental effect on electric cars.

The battery life of most electronic devices is compromised and less effective when exposed to higher temperatures, and electric cars are no exception, with a study conducted by GeoTab on 6,000 electric vehicles¹ showing that the capacity of an electric car battery is reduced when driven in hot weather.

As well as this, tyre pressure can be affected on all types of vehicles in warmer weather, and with electric vehicles often being heavier than standard vehicles, tyre pressure could be diminished further.

How to prevent issues

·         Park your electric vehicle in the shade – Parking any vehicle in the shade during hot weather is best practice, but it is particularly important for electric vehicles to be kept cool to ensure optimal function of their lithium-ion batteries. If this is not possible, taking other preventative measures to keep your vehicles temperature down such as a sunshade for your windscreen will help.

·         Avoid driving between 12pm and 3pm – Just like we are all advised to avoid being directly in the heat when it is at its most powerful, the same goes for your electric vehicle. This will help to make the most of your vehicle’s energy and range, as well as preserving the vehicle’s tyre pressure.

·         Charge your vehicle to 80% - Electric vehicles share the same type of battery as other portable electronic devices such as laptops and smartphones, meaning that these devices run the risk of being overcharged. Overcharging is often coupled with overheating, which when combined with increased temperatures, elevates the chance of damage occurring. Therefore, only charging your vehicle to 80% capacity will significantly reduce this risk.

Overheating is also a significant concern when it comes to wiring and cabling, with the possibility of a number of issues occurring if wires and cables are not adequately protected.

These issues could be wires and cables melting, leading to electric shocks and possibly fires, or causing particular overhead cabling and wiring to sag, leading to less effective functionality, short circuiting and damage caused by contact with trees and branches.

How to prevent issues

·         Invest in heat resistant cabling – If you know that your wiring and cabling will be exposed to raised temperatures, you can take preventative measures by installing cabling and wiring that can withstand extreme temperatures. Fire and Heat Resistant Cables are often used for commercial and industrial projects that can withstand much more than a standard British heatwave.

·         Install wiring insulation on existing cables – If you are concerned about your current cabling or wiring suffering in the heat, investing in effective insulation with heat and even fire resistant properties can reduce and sometimes even completely eliminate the possibility of damage or issues.

Domestic Electrical Appliances

It is often the case that extreme heat is followed by storms that include lightning, which can have an effect on a number of electrical appliances, and can even be so intense that it causes a power outage.

The excess electrical current caused by a lightning strike can cause a power surge, causing fixtures such as lighting and Wi-Fi routers to lose power and even become damaged as a result.

How to prevent issues

·         Invest in Surge Protection Devices – These Surge Protection Devices are a great way to protect your devices from electrical current surges, and are an excellent addition to your electrical setup even when extreme weather conditions are not a factor.

·         Unplug your devices – If possible, unplug any unnecessary devices while lightning is occurring, to eliminate the possibility of any damage being done to these appliances.
