3 ways to make your cables last longer

Cables are a vital part of every home or businesses electrical system, therefore it is important to keep them in the best condition to prevent any faults and issues, as well as saving money in the long run.

1.     Be gentle with your cables

When disconnecting a cable from an appliance or device, it is important to only pull on the cable near the plug or near where the cable connects to the device or appliance. Pulling on the cable in the middle puts an unnecessary amount of stress on the cable and can cause both external and internal damage.

This rule is particular important to adhere to in the case of thinner cables such as phone and laptop chargers, but even if you think your sturdier cables like electrical power cables are less prone to breakage, this simple step will keep your cables in top condition.

2.     Proper cable storage

Most of us have been there, we neglected our cables and now they are tangled up in a ball and you don’t know which cable is which. This very common issue can be prevented by practicing proper cable storage, this will not only keep your cables in good working order, but will keep them more organised, so you can just grab them and go.

The best way to store cables is to loop the cable around itself 3 or 4 times, then tuck the ends of the cable under to make sure it is sufficiently secured. Tactics to avoid are squashing the cable too tightly or storing them in a tight space, and it is highly recommended that you do not tie the ends of the cable in a knot, as this can also put great stress on the delicate cable.

3.     Invest in Cable Protectors

Cable Protectors are an excellent way to reinforce cables and prolong their lifespan. These protectors are often made of rubber or other flexible materials and are designed to wrap around the cable to offer an extra level of protection against damage.

For the best protection, you can place a Cable Protector on both sides of the cable, one where the cable meets the appliance or device, and the other where the cable connects to the plug. For more commercial areas, you can find larger Cable Protectors that protect any cables that run across the floor. This not only prevents damage to the cables, but reduces the risk of slips, trips and falls.
